DHL celebrates its 20th anniversary on the Romanian courier service market

DHL is celebrating this year its 20th anniversary on the Romanian market. DHL is owned by Deutsche Post World Net and operates in two market sectors – logistics and express courier. In Romania, the company is the leader of the express courier market, providing its customers with international expertise on air, road and maritime express courier and contract logistics.

Gian Sharp is also celebrating 20 years since he is working for DHL, starting in Saudi Arabia and continuing his DHL journey with Sudan and China. For the last 10 years he has been Managing Director for DHL Romania.
DHL was the first international air expresses courier company which started operating as an agent in Romania in 1984 and the first one that established as a wholly owned entity in 1991. Over the years, it became one of the top providers of logistics and mail and freight express delivery in Romania.
In 1995, the company was already inaugurated 18 DHL offices all across the country, ensuring a 100% national coverage in the country and in 1998 it became the first international express courier company in Romania certified according to ISO 9002 quality standard. Year 2002 was marked by changes: Deutsche Post World Net became a DHL shareholder, getting to fully own the company by the end of the same year. This is the time when a vast rebranding campaign was undertaken, for the DHL logo to become what it is today. From 2005 to 2009, DHL organised an annual charity event, called the 'DHL Marathon', proving it is a socially responsible company. The DHL brand success on the local market was certified every year starting with 2006 being recognized as a Business Superbrands and receiving the Superbrands Trophee.
In 2008, DHL strengthened its market position by acquiring the first private domestic courier company in Romania – Cargus. The acquisition is part of DHL's strategy to strengthen its leadership of the Romanian courier market.
The investments made by DHL to continuously satisfy customer needs won't stop. DHL has recently launched a new aircraft in Cluj, which became the fourth international gateway for DHL Romania, thus strengthen its position in the Western Area of the country. DHL will make in 2011 a 2 million euro investment in new shelved vehicles in order to improve productivity and offer the best pick-up and delivery times for its customers.
Our objectives for future mainly aims at operational investments for improving transit times and cut-offs, these being the most sensitive elements for our customers when choosing an express courier delivery partner.
Gian Sharp concludes: '20 years of DHL Romania means, in numbers, over 450 employees, over 250 vehicles, 4 Cargo terminals in Otopeni, Arad, Cluj, Oradea, over 50 shipping and operational centres and last, but not least, processing over 1 million shipments a year. DHL has become what it is today due to its employee and customers. Leadership is what motivates us to maintain our innovative spirit, which has allowed us to provide our customers with high quality services.
