Romanian exporters and importers ask BNR to intervene on forex market
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 23 Ianuarie 2009
The National Association of Exporters and Importers of Romania (ANEIR) has asked the Romanian National Bank (BNR) to intervene to temper the depreciation of the national currency leu, motivating the current parity with the foreign currencies on the market represents no more than the result of some speculations.
'Although the exchange rate appears favourable to us and it would have been useful in normal times, in such moments of crisis, with the orders sharply slumping, we get no revenues. Orders saw a huge drop by 46 percent early in January, as compared with the same period last year,' ANEIR Secretary General Mihai Ionescu told Agerpres on Thursday.
Romanian exporters consider the current leu-to-the-euro exchange rate is artificial and they say they cannot come to have profit in such times of crisis when orders reduce by a half.
The ANEIR Secretary General appreciated that a normal exchange rate should stay at 3.6-3.8 lei for one euro.
'The current exchange rate is an artificial one, being the result of certain speculations of speculative funds, who cannot be something else but winners in such situations. That's why we ask the BNR to intervene. A normal exchange rate should stay at 3.6-3.8 lei for one euro,' Ionescu said.
The Romanian currency leu appreciated against the euro on Thursday morning on the inter-banking market, climbing again up to 4.30 lei for one euro, however a little bit under the reference rate released by the BNR on Wednesday, of 4.3098 lei.
