CCIB representation offices to attract investors to Romania
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 27 Ianuarie 2009
The Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIB) plans to open representation offices in the world's important economic centres to attract investors to Romania, CCIB Chairman Sorin Dimitriu announced during a meeting with UK Ambassador in Bucharest Robin Barnett.
The centres under consideration are Barcelona in Spain, Rome in Italy, Tel Aviv in Israel and London in the UK.
'The UK is a very important partner to us, even if the capital invested in Romania so far is far beneath UK's real potential, representing only 3 percent of the direct foreign investment Romania has absorbed. There are many fields this presence could extend to,' Dimitriu pointed out and suggested that the UK Embassy in Romania back up the Romanian-British cooperation on third markets, under agreements concluded by CCIB with chambers of commerce from important Balkan and Central Asian economic hubs.
According to CCIB, its trade missions to these countries have identified several projects for industries such as energy, machine building, pharmaceuticals, environmental protection and IT&C. The business people participating in the missions also proposed the development of master's degree courses in business management, all these being fields where the UK expertise is welcome.
'Romania has failed to access the EU funds it was allocated and it needs consultancy, as the main field the UK companies can help us with, namely the EU funds, is an essential financing source during times of crisis,' the CCIB official added.
Ambassador Barnett assured the participants of the UK Government;s total support for the development of green energy. We are very open and we will fully back up CCIB organising an important event in order to attract business people and experts here to Romania, the Barnett pointed out.
Ambassador Barnett also mentioned a rising trend of UK investmen during the past three years, since he was appointed ambassador to Bucharest, mentioning that there are currently 3,200 UK-owned companies operating in Romania.
CCIB has contacts with partners in southern UK, where it plans to open a trade mission this March and is willing to participate in the preparations for the London-based CCI office, also an opportunity for a forum to approach the topic of the economic crisis and the opportunities Romania offers.
Also attending the dialogue was UK Embassy's first secretary for trade development Richard Beams.
