IMF mission ends visit to Romania
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 4 Februarie 2009
A mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) having evaluated the macroeconomic state of Romania for two weeks ends its visit today in Bucharest.
The IMF delegation, headed by IMF Director Jeffrey Franks, started talks with the Romanian authorities on January 27, and the visit was part of the annual evaluations of the economy and prospects for the current year.
The main talks were held at the Public Finance Ministry headquarters in Bucharest and focused on fiscal year 2008, the 2009 Budget projections and budgetary management.
The IMF officials met members of the Romanian Government and private sector representatives in order to facilitate an exchange of opinions on the policies of the new Romanian Cabinet.
One day before the IMF mission came to Bucharest, President Traian Basescu stated that he is no supporter of an IMF loan , but of a loan from the European Union under a supervision agreement to be concluded with the IMF.
Prime Minister Emil Boc said Romania has problems with financing its Government deficit but has various solutions to raise a loan - either from the European Union or from the International Monetary Fund.
'We do not rule out either the European Union, or the International Monetary Fund. We will make a decision in the Government in the immediate future,' said Boc.
At the beginning of its mission in Romania, the IMF announced in a press release that the Romanian Government had not requested any assistance programme from it and that there were no talks in this issue at the meeting. The IMF also said there was no pressure on the Government to request such programme.
