AmCham Romania disapproves an increased CAS rate
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 4 Februarie 2009
The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania (AmCham Romania) expresses its sincere concern regarding the increase with 3,3 percent of the social security contributions (CAS) supported by both the employees and employers, as included in the 2009 budgetary project, reads a release of the organization sent to Agerpres.
AmCham Romania emphasizes that, under the current economic downturn, increased fiscal burdens deeply affect the business environment, especially as by this time, companies have already drawn their operational budgets, and are now forced to identify supplementary financing to feed the increased taxation.
The announced increase contradicts the previous governmental statements, as well as the anti-crisis policies adopted by the majority of EU member states to reduce the fiscal burden supported by taxpayers. In AmCham's opinion, this change also fails to observe the fiscal stability and predictability that the business environment needs and also prejudices Romania's overall competitiveness, especially as Romania has one of the highest taxation levels among EU countries.
'Companies in all sectors of activity are doing efforts to keep their costs under control and to keep their staff, and an increased level of social contributions is only making this harder' stated the AmCham President, Alexandra Gatej.
On behalf of the business community it represents and its more than 300 member companies doing business in Romania, AmCham voices the disagreement and concern of the business community regarding the increase of the social security contributions and calls for stability and predictability, as well as genuine anti-crisis measures to support the private sector, with an immediate positive effect for the Romanian society.
This fiscal and economic turnaround creates a dangerous precedent for the current Government and gives a negative feedback to the business community.
The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania (AmCham Romania) is an apolitical, non-profit organization, founded in 1993. AmCham Romania now has more than 300 members - American, international and local businesses, representing investments above 10 billion USD, and more than 120.000 jobs created. AmCham Romania is affiliated to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a member of the European Council of the American Chambers of Commerce.
