Isarescu: Stock of government bonds stands at 25 billion lei

The stock of government bonds went up over the past three months from 12 billion lei to 25 billion lei, Central Bank Governor Mugur Isarescu said Monday at the Romanian Banking Institute.

"This bond package is big enough for the commercial banks to initiate operations on the secondary market,' Isarescu said.

The BNR official has advised banks to make government bond portfolios.

Isarescu also said he was very interested in the government bond market as creditor of the banking system and that the banks can resort to credit facilities from the BNR only if they have government bonds.

He underscored the central bank continues to pump money into the market through repo-type of operations and the purchase and selling of government bonds.

'There are banks who don't have government bonds yet. There were even more of them last fall,' Isarescu said.
