Transilvania University rector presents Scientific Research Institute draft development project
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 11 Februarie 2009
Rector of the Transilvania University of Brasov Ion Visa introduced to a seminar held at the European Parliament as part of the EU sustainable energy week 2009 events a draft development project for the Institute of Scientific Research, which should be the first research institute in Eastern Europe focusing exclusively on renewable energy.
'The Transilvania University would like to develop the project for the establishment of the Scientific Research Institute. We have managed to gather under the same umbrella all the research centres of our university - 21 departments - and we are taking into consideration all the important aspects of this field. We approach three sub-fields: energy efficiency, reducing energy losses and introducing new energy sources,' Visa explained.
The project, which started more than one year ago, uses electricity generated by photovoltaic energy and solar energy and in the future it will use biomass to generate heating. The project is funded with structural funds worth RON 60 million, toward which the university is contributing RON 20 million from its own funds.
Visa said that in order to carry out the Scientific Research Institute project, the university is prioritising developing the necessary human resources. Thus, there are currently 20 master's degree students attending master's programmes in the area of renewable energy sources design, and the university has entered partnerships with various other European Union member states.
Organiser of the seminar, MEP Dragos Florin David (EPP-ED/PD-L), himself a graduate of the Transilvania University of Brasov, said Romania is prepared for research and implementation of renewable energy projects.
'We have a singular chance which we must use to good ends. I am glad that Romania is opening the series of events in this week of sustainable energy. Our message is for the entire European community. We have been preparing this event for four months and I believe it is very important to be heard that Romania is promoting renewable energy,' the MEP said.
The EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW 2009) opened on Monday in Brussels. The event is attended by more than 6,000 participants and visitors and is focused on the written pledges of nearly 400 European towns and cities to drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2010.
Among the Romanian town and cities having signed the pledge are Craiova, Baia Mare, Targoviste, Ramnicu Valcea, Targu-Jiu, Giurgiu, Slobozia, Aiud and Mizil. The town of Sighisoara has voiced intention to follow suit.
Attending the EUSEW 2009 events in Brussles will be European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs; Chairman of the Committee of Regions Luc Van den Brande; Deputy Chairman of the European Parliament Alejo Vidal Quadras; Budapest City Mayor Davor Demszky; Hamburg City Mayor Ole von Beust, and Madrid City Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardon.
