INS: Inflation stands at 1.2 percent in January

Inflation rate stood at 1.24 percent in January 2009, compared with the previous month, while the annual inflation rate (January 2008-January 2009) stood at 6.71 percent, as against the annual inflation rate of 6.3 percent in end-2008, according to data released on Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
The average monthly rate stood at 1.2 percent in January 2009, against 0.9 percent in January 2008 and 0.23 percent in December 2008.
Compared with December 2008, the prices for foodstuffs increased by 0.71 percent, those for the non-food products climbed by 0.83 percent, while the tariffs for services went up by 3.27 percent. The price for foodstuffs increased by 5.93 percent on January 2008, the tariffs for services increased by 8.92 percent, with the prices for the non-food stuffs climbed by 6.43 percent.
The average growth of prices in all categories in the latest 12 months (February 2008-January 2009) compared with the previous similar interval determined based on the IPC stood at 7.8 percent, with the one determined based on the harmonized index of he consumption prices (IAPC) having stood at 7.9 percent.
Governor of the Romanian National Bank (BNR) Mugur Isarescu has recently stated BNR maintained the inflation target for 2009 at 4.5 percent, that is the same level announced in November 2008.
BNR estimates Romania will record economic growth in 2009, with the Government having taken into account an economic growth by 2.5 percent this year. The European Commission anticipates an economic growth by 1.8 percent, while the IMF warned Romania might enter recession in 2009.
