Romanian Waters Management approves gondola sailing on Dambovita river
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 13 Februarie 2009
The experts of the Romanian Waters Management have recently given their approval in principle for the sailing of gondolas on Bucharest's Dambovita river, capital deputy mayor Robert Ionescu is quoted by the Cotidianul daily as saying.
The project of gondolas on the Dambovita and sailing ships on the Bucharest lakes belongs to company MKS Electronik, which is currently in talks with the local authorities. It plans to bring to Bucharest 15 ships that are 100-percent replicas of the 16th-18th century vessels as well as oar-gondolas.
The company wants the project to be a private-public partnership, to which MKS Electronik will contribute the logistics and the Bucharest City Hall will contribute the space, i.e. the waters, company official Gabriel Radu Salom said.
He explained there will be 15 old sailing ships - Spanish, English, French and even pirates' ships. As for the gondolas, they will sail on a 15-kilometre distance on the Dambovita. Both the ships and gondolas will be made in the Netherlands.
Building a 16th-18th century replica ship costs some 700,000 to 800,000 euros, while a gondola costs several thousand euros.
