Institutional investors want to exit Romanian stock exchange
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 18 Februarie 2009
Quotations of the largest banks listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB), ERSTE and BRD (Romanian Development Bank) collapsed during the session on Tuesday, by almost 15 percent, against the background of the deterioration of the investors' perception of the region and movements of players on the domestic stock exchange.
'The causes of such collapse in the quotations appeared to be the result of the recent report of rating agency Moody's and the fact that certain institutional players on the market appear to want to exit the market. In the context, the liquidity on the Stock Exchange is quite low, there results a high volatility of the quotations too,' deputy general manager of the brokerage house Intercapital Invest Adi Lupsan told Agerpres.
Quotations of the BRD shares dropped on Tuesday by 15 percent, while in the case of the ERSTE shares, they have dropped by 14.91 percent, close to the limit when trades would have been suspended.
The financial evaluation agency Moody's has shown in a recent report that the recession in the EU emergent countries is going to be even more severe than in any other state, due to the accumulated imbalances, which are to put pressure on the ratings of the local banks and parent-banks too.
Quotations of the shares listed on the BVB depreciated on Tuesday by an average 7.25 percent, with the evolution being measured by the composite BET-C index, while the shares of the financial investment companies SIFs dropped by 8.50 percent (the BET-FI index).
There were concluded transactions on the main BVB market, Regular, with shares issued by 50 companies, among which two recorded appreciations of the quotations, four stagnated and 44 plummeted.
The value of the BVB trades stood at 2.648 million euros (11.412 million lei) and of the RASDAQ at 157,053 euros.
The BET index, reflecting the evolution of the ten most liquid shares listed, saw a drop by 8.59 percent, with the ROTX index having plunged by 9.94 percent. The extended blue-chip index BET-XT plummeted by 8.34 percent, with the BET-NG index of the companies in the energy and utilities sector having depreciated by 6.68 percent.
The most liquid shares were BRD's, with trades worth 1.665 million lei, Banca Transilvania's 1.589 million lei and SIF 4 Muntenia, 843,494 lei.
