BNR: Number of banks in Romania grows to 43 in fourth quarter of 2008

The number of banks present in the Romanian market grew in the last quarter of 2008, from 42 to 43 by the opening of Depfa Bank in December 2008, the director of the Supervision Department of BNR , Nicolae Cinteza said.
"The 43rd banking institution is Depfa Bank which was authorized by BNR at the end of 2007 but began functioning in December 2008," Cinteza said, quoted by NewsIn.
42 banks activated in the market, including branches of foreign banks and Creditcoop at the end of September 2008. Of them six are banks with local capital (CEC Bank, Banca Transilvania, EximBank, Carpatica commercial Bank, Libra Bank and Creditcoop, the rest having majority foreign capital.
The Irish bank Depfa is controlled since October 2007 by the German group Hypo Real Estate while a branch of a credit institution of an EU member states has been functioning in the local market.
In Romania Depfa was included in the registrar of credit institutions on 20 December 2007 while the date of the inauguration of the branch in Bucharest was postponed several times last year.
