The automotive market in collapse – 65 pc drop in sales

The sales of new vehicles in Romania dropped by up to 65 per cent, in the first month of the year, compared to the same time period of 2008. Thus, only 8,187 units sold, and the strongest decline was registered in case of buses, according to the data released by the Association of Automotive Producers and Importers (APIA), Mediafax informs.

In the first month of 2008, there were 23,369 units sold (cars, commercial vehicles and buses). The segment of cars reported the lowest decrease compared to the other categories of vehicles, by 63.9 per cent, from 19,712 units in the first month of last year to 7,110 units.

The classification of car marks, depending on the number of vehicles delivered in January, continues to be led by Dacia (1,465 units), then Volkswagen (918 units) and Hyundai (639 cars).

The Romanian overall automotive market reported a decline by 11.7 per cent last ear, down to 324,080 units. The decrease of the market, last year and in January, is caused by the financial crisis, which resulted in a more difficult access to loans, as well as the reluctance of consumers to spend. Potential buyers also waited for the start of "Rabla" program and for the completion of the automotive pollution fee calculation.

The automotive market could recover in the next months as the automotive fleet renewal program "Rabla" starts in the first part of March, and the uncertainties related to the new automotive pollution fee were phased out.

The national automotive production, which is almost exclusively backed by Dacia, collapsed by 62 per cent in January, to 9,482 units, whereas exports dropped by 30.7 per cent, to 8,943 vehicles. The exports were dominated by cars, which accounted for more than 90 per cent (8,242 units) of the total, but there were fewer deliveries abroad, by 35.8 per cent.

The best sales of Ford exceeded 2000 cars per month. Currently, Ford hardly sells 320 cars, according to Realitatea.net. Opel sold slightly over 300 cars, compared to 1,500, in January last year. The same group includes Chevrolet brand, which also could not sell more than 200 cars.

Skoda experienced decreases unseen before, so that the sales slightly exceeded last month 500 cars, compared to an average of 2,000 cars registered last year.
