Residents' deposits rise 1.8 pc in January

Residents, non-governmental clients' deposits rose in January 2009 by 1.8 percent from December 2008, to the level of 154.120 billion lei, according to data released on Tuesday by Romania's National Bank (BNR).
Deposits in lei (national currency) made by households rose by 4 percent, to 54.507 billion lei compared to December 2008 and by 25.9 percent (18 percent in real terms) from Jan. 31, 2008. Deposits in lei of corporate entities (non-financial societies and non-monetary financial institutions) dropped by 111.2 percent, to 41.230 billion lei, in Jan., 2009 compared to the previous month and by 2.8 percent (minus 8.9 percent in real terms) from Jan. 31, 2008.
Households deposits in foreign currency expressed in lei jumped by 27.9 percent (expressed in euros, households foreign currency deposits advanced by 10.7 percent) and foreign currency deposits of corporate entities (non-financial societies and non-monetary financial institutions) expressed in lei surged by 43.9 percent (expressed in euro, the growth of foreign currency deposits of corporate residents accounted for 24.5 percent).
Non-governmental credit given by credit institutions increased in Jan. 2009 by 4.2 percent (2.9 percent in real terms) from Dec. 2008, exceeding the level of 206.435 billion lei.
Credit in lei increased by 0.1 percent (minus 1.1 percent in real terms), whereas the credit in foreign currency expressed in lei advanced by 7.2 percent (expressed in euro, foreign currency credit dropped by 0.1 percent).
As against Jan. 31, 2008 the non-governmental credit recorded a growth of 33.8 percent (25.4 percent in real terms) on Jan. 31, 2009, on the account of the advance of 20.8 percent of the component in lei (13.2 percent in real terms) and by 44.5 percent of the component in foreign currency expressed in lei (expressed in euro, the increase of the foreign currency credit accounted for 25.0 percent).
