Crisis to affect domestic and international transport
ACT Media – news agency - 3 Martie 2009
The financial crisis affects both the domestic and the international goods transport, the companies in the domain expecting a drop of the activity by almost 60% until the end of the year, the chairman of the Federation of Romanian Transport Operators (FORT) Augustin Hagiu said.
According to him, the number of journeys is more and more reduced, which can be noticed by following the traffic which is more relaxed than the same period of last year. " Out of the few trucks which we see on the roads, the majority belong to foreign companies, still standing the impact of the crisis" Hagiu said. The chairman of the FORT explained that this situation is due to the problems in the economy, especially industry and services, the solution for 2009 being the revitalization of the agriculture through easy access to European funds and state aids.
The more disturbing is the fact that the number of goods listed at the most important stock exchange is, at present, about one thousand, while last year during the same period it was over ten thousand. The crisis does not affect only small companies, but the big ones as well, such as Edy Logistics or International Lazar Company, companies announcing lay-offs and asking for help from the state in order to survive in the present conditions on the market.
Although specialised transport on industries still survive through the import of chemical substances, the specialized on constructions are among the most affected, according to the opinion of the FORT leader. Augustin Hagiu wanted to mention that not only goods transport is affected but the other types as well." Persons transport is dropping as we notice a number ever smaller of customers who require services in this domain" Augustin Hagiu said. FORT chairman said that " the state announced an increase in taxes, which is worrying for everybody in the domain".
Hagiu explained that these measures will lead to the increase of fiscal evasion and the companies in the domain will issue fewer invoices. At the same time, the employees will be paid " with black money" as a result of the attempt on the part of the companies to keep " the balance between expenditure and payments". As solutions, theFORT chairman proposed a fiscal relaxation, evident through tax reduction, VAT, the state budget income being compensated through an increase in excises in fuel, the least affected domain by the present situation.
