Overdue payments for credits in Romania soar 23% in January to EUR 822m, central lender says

Romanians' arrears to credits hiked 23 percent at the end of January over the previous month and amounted to 3.53 billion lei (822.7 million euros), data from the central lender BNR show.
At the end of 2008, overdue payments of companies and the population represented 1.44 percent of the total volume of loans granted. The arrears doubled weight in the period January 2008-January 2009, from 0.817 percent to 1.7 percent.
Overdue payments for credits in lei amounted to 2.07 billion lei in the first month of the year, while the ones for loans in foreign currency stood at 340.7 million euros.
The total volume of arrears boosted 178 percent in January versus the same month in the previous year. Debts in lei rose by 197 million lei over the previous month and reached 2.07 billion lei, while the ones in foreign currency added 91.4 million euros, to 340.7 million euros.
Loans granted by banks reached 207.44 billion lei in the first month of the year, of which 83.87 billion lei (40 percent) represented credits in lei.
