Deloitte: Hotels occupancy rate in Bucharest decreased by 19.6 pc in 2008
Nine o'Clock - 10 Martie 2009
The occupancy rate of hotels in Bucharest witnessed one of the most significant drops in Europe, in 2008, declining by 19.6 per cent, to 57 per cent, triggered by a deterioration in the consumers' confidence, shortage of funds and lower travel expenditures, based on the annual report of Deloitte Touche, Mediafax informs.
While hotel offer in Bucharest advanced significantly, following the inauguration of units such as Ramada Plaza or Radisson SAS, or the extension of Rin Grand Hotel, the revenues per available room (revPAR) dropped by 12.7 per cent, to EUR 76 (USD 96). "The figures published four months ago indicated that the hotel market in Bucharest experienced the second important drop in the occupancy rate within Europe (-14.2 per cent, to 61.2 per cent). The most recent survey indicates an even higher drop, considering that the overall economic decline became stronger and affected leisure and business tourism sectors, mainly in the fourth quarter of 2008", according to those outlined in a press release by George Mucibaci, CEO of Deloitte Romania consulting company. According to him, because the prospects are not good over the next time period, the tourism industry will focus on survival strategies this year.
Bucharest Athenee Palace Hilton hotel posed, one year ago, an increase in turnover by 6 per cent and 10 per cent advance in profit, compared to the previous year, and for 2009, the representatives of the unit aim at maintaining the results of 2008, in an optimist scenario. The general manager of the hotel, Friedrich W. Niemann mentioned that the target for 2009 is to preserve the results from last year, although this target seems unlikely considering the economic crisis.
Hilton network considers affiliation of several hotels in Romania, following a second unit recently included in the portfolio, in Sibiu, and targets important cities, in this respect, such as Brasov, Timisoara and Cluj. The main aim of the chain is represented by the development of the key brand, Hilton, along with the brands Doubletree and Hilton Garden Inn. "In Bucharest, we consider the affiliation of a hotel, it might be Doubletree (4-5 stars) or Garden Inn (3 stars).
2009 is not good for any hotel in Romania, as the market has changed completely, demand has dropped, and offer advanced strongly in the past months. The clients who used to accommodate in five - star hotels, are now seeking four stars, while those accommodating at 3 stars do not travel any more", Niemann said.
Record figure of 924 million tourists at global level in 2008
According to World Tourism Organization, the number of tourists who traveled abroad advanced by 5 per cent, in the first half of the year, but the situation reversed in the second half of the year, a drop by 1 per cent being registered, which led to an overall annual growth by 2 per cent, based on a survey published by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. Even if this percentage decreased to less than 7 per cent, the level registered in 2007, there were 16 million tourists who traveled abroad, which led to a record figure of 924 million tourists at global level. Europe accounts for ten positions within the top 20 of average fees per room and seven positions within top 20 of average revenues per available room, based on the survey mentioned.
