EC thinks Romania has more taxes than any other state in Europe, says European Commissioner Leonard Orban
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 13 Martie 2009
The European Commission (EC) thinks Romania has more taxes than any other state in Europe, with European evaluations showing 113 charges and taxes currently being cashed by Romanian authorities, European Commissioner for Multilingualism Leonard Orban said on Thursday.
He also added that one of the requirements of the Commission was also the significant drop of this large number of taxes.
According to the European official, there are taxes the collection of which costs the Romanian State more than they actually bring to the budget. The European Commission is determined to fight all kind of bureaucracy so as to help the business environment function, especially at this time of crisis, the European Commissioner said in context.
Referring to another matter, Orban also said there currently was a number of measures proposed by the EC with a view to helping the situation in the banking sector go back to normal. 'What I want to say now is that two weeks have already passed since the EC adopted a notification regarding such assets presenting not only 'toxic' problems, but in general causing problems in the banking field,' he said.
With regard to the relation between the parent banks and their branches in the EU member states, they informally established to support the banks individually, 'case by case,' and 'not globally,' the European Commissioner added.
The Romanian Government on Wednesday approved a memorandum to cut the number of taxes and prices, which cost the Government more than they actually bring to the budget. The Government identified 558 such taxes, in 185 normative acts, which cost the Government more than they produce.
The Government is also to take over from the ministries on April 15 the proposals to cancel, cut or merge taxes and prices in order to simplify the fiscal legislation.
Minister of Finance Gheorghe Pogea said the measure was meant to support businessmen in Romania.
