Higher excises on tabacco and alcohol boost budget revenues

Higher taxes on tobacco and alcoholic drinks, other than beer and wine, to be enforced as of April 1, will increase budget revenues by 590 million lei , that is 0.10 percent of the GDP this year, according to a justification note of the ordinance on changing the Fiscal Code, published by the Finance Ministry.
The alcohol excise will increase to 45 euro per hectoliter (from 34.05 euro per hectoliter) in the case of frothy fermented drinks and to 65 euro per hectoliter ( from 51.08 euro per hectoliter) in the case of other types of alcoholic drinks.
Excises on every thousand cigarettes will go up in two stages: to 54 euros as of April the 1st and to 64 euros as of September the 1st. Excises on tobacco for smoking have also been increased to 81 euro per kilogram.
