Eight more foreign banks interested in Romanian market
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 19 Martie 2009
Another eight banks in the EU have notified the Romanian National Bank (BNR) about their intention to provide services directly on the Romanian market based on the European financial passport, despite the current troubled international environment, Ziarul financiar daily reads on Wednesday.
Aegon Bank, Raiffeisen Stras-Spielfeld and Nord LB Covered Bank joined the list of institutions interested in the Romanian market in the first three months of the year. Additionally, three institutions specialized in issuing electronic currency - PSI-Pay, Vincento Payment Solutions and Smart Voucher Limited, have submitted notifications to the BNR.
Aegon Bank is a division of Dutch insurer Aegon, which is present on the Romanian market via a pension fund and a life insurance company. According to its notification, the bank is interested in attracting deposits, providing trading services, portfolio administration and custody of financial instruments.
Nord LB Covered Finance is a financial vehicle of Nord LB Group, one of the top ten players in the German financial system. The bank is specialized in public finance and attraction of financing for the group, especially in the countries outside the euro zone.
Raiffeisen Stras-Spielfeld is a member of Raiffeisen Group, which offers micro-credits, in value of up to 25,000 euros, for small enterprises, with a regional presence in Austria.
Number of institutions having notified BNR, planning to operate locally after Romania's EU accession reached 174. The European passport alternative offers these players the opportunity to structure cross-border deals, when these solutions are more advantageous than the running of operations locally.
The players offering direct services have had a pretty discreet presence on the market, active in the recent years just in the field of corporate financing. Otherwise, many private companies appealed to direct credits to the parent banks or even to foreign banks, accumulating a foreign debt of almost 21 billion euros till last year-end.
On the retail zone no foreign player offered services on the basis of the European financial passport.
A number of 31 banks operate on the local banking market, authorized by BNR alongside 12 branches of some EU groups.
