Eco-Rom Ambalaje business surges 40 pct in 2008

Eco-Rom Ambalaje used by 41 percent more packaging waste in 2008 from the prior year and it exceeded by 14 percent the legal target of using the packaging waste, the company announced on Thursday.
Compared to the legal target of 40 percent set last year, Eco-Rom Ambalaje used more than 45 percent of the total packaging quantity put into the market by the company clients. Eco-Rom Ambalaje recovered and used nearly 340,000 tonnes of package waste of the total 745,000 tonnes put by its clients into the market.
Eco-Rom Ambalaje had 1,153 companies as its clients at end-2008, up 25 percent on end-2007.
'2008 was a very good year for Eco-Rom Ambalaje in terms of meeting the obligations of collecting and using the packaging waste made to our clients and also from a financial viewpoint. The company ended last year in 32.6 million lei worth of turnover, by more than 40 percent higher than in 2007', the company president Mugurel Radulescu said.
Last year, Eco-Rom Ambalaje also extended its activity of collecting and using the packaging waste from the population to 42 cities and towns, which have a total 1.8 million residents. The company last year invested 500,000 euros in activities meant to back the municipalities and the garbage collecting firms it collaborates with in order to build the required infrastructure.
The packaging waste collected from the population last year with the support of Eco-Rom Ambalaje totaled some 12,000 tonnes, accounting for 3.5 percent of the total quantity of such waste that the company used last year.
Eco-Rom Ambalaje was set up in 2003 by a group of companies operating in the Romanian market, which took the initiative of implementing a Green Point system ('Der Grune Punkt') nationwide. Eco-Rom Ambalaje at present has partnerships with more than 150 companies operating in waste management.
