BNS president: IMF representatives more flexible this time
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 24 Martie 2009
The representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that they would be more flexible with the requirements on Romania, considering the crisis that does no longer allow the same approach as so far, said president of the National Trade Union Bloc (BNS) Dumitru Costin at the end of the meeting with the IMF delegation.
Dumitru Costin added that his message to the Romanian entrepreneurs is that they should refrain from layoffs but try to use the existing human resources.
Among the issues discussed with the IMF delegation, Dumitru Costin mentioned wages in the public sector, the pensions system and the budget deficit, adding that other delegations of IMF experts are soon expected in Romania for further talks with the government.
Referring to the assessment of the Romanian economy, Dumitru Costin said that the IMF expects economic growth to be in the negative this year at minus 4 pct, grounding its opinion on the ongoing global economic and financial crisis that also affects Romania, on the fact that Romanian exports are directed to countries that are also hit by the crisis and on the poor condition of Romania's infrastructure.
The good news brought by Dumitru Costin is that the IMF representatives acknowledged that Romania's banking system is in a different situation than that of other states.
Referring to the wage policy in the public sector, the BNS president underscored that he agrees with the IMF that individual assessments are necessary for each institution, given that some institutions are overstaffed, whereas others have a staff deficit. Another problem is related to bonuses, calling for the need to re-write the law on public servants' wages so as to allow the remuneration of overtime, the pay of the seniority bonus and the night shift bonus, but remove excess that takes the difference between highest and lowest paid public servant categories to 1/50.
At the end of the meeting, the IMF representatives said that things are going on well but some major meetings are still on the agenda that could influence the terms of the agreement.
