OTP Bank: The bank credit market to be revived by mid-year

The bank loans market could register a slight revival until the middle of this year, when the crisis will somewhat calm down, the general director of OTP Bank Romania, Laszlo Diosi, told yesterday a press conference. He said that the banks must find another approach to risk, because at this moment it is not exactly known which industries are sufficiently safe. Diosi estimates that the reduction of the minimum compulsory reserves by the central bank could be a negative signal for investors, and the money may leave the country. He explained: "If the minimum compulsory reserve is reduced, it is a bad sign for the investors, and there isn't any guarantee that this money will return in credits."

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) could reduce the minimum compulsory reserves, after the money obtained by Romania from IMF will enter BNR reserve, says OTP chief. He declared that OTP Bank will not withdraw the money representing the reserve with BNR, because it has long term reversible deposits from the parent bank. Diosi declared that OTP Bank Romania has enough money for credits and wants to identify the segments towards which it can turn. He added that the bank targets first of all the SME sector, the agricultural processors, the clients who are powerful enough to buy something in the market. OTP Bank Romania also negotiates with EBRD a loan between EUR 10 and 20 M, an agreement being signed in June. The funds will be used for the SME sector.

OTP Bank Romania announced yesterday the launching of a promotional campaign for deposits in the period March 23-April 30, 2009. Thus, the natural persons who make deposits on term on two or four months, in Euro or RON, benefit from the payment in advance of the interest rate.
