Canadians interested in development of Cernavoda nuclear units 3 and 4
Nine o'Clock - 31 Martie 2009
The construction of the Cernavoda nuclear power station reactors 3 and 4 is a subject of interest for a group of Canadian business people currently visiting Bucharest. The visit is an opportunity to expand co-operation of Canadian and local companies.
‘It is an important moment to develop these relations', said John Saroudis, Regional Vice-President of AECL, at a meeting organized at the Canadian Embassy in Bucharest. He said the Cernavoda project was an important one to Romanians and to prospective investors alike. ‘It is a project of national importance for Romania, a competitive one on an open electricity market', Saroudis said. According to him, it is important to find a number of suppliers with reduced costs. John Saroudis further noted the Cernavoda rectors 3 and 4 project was also an excellent business opportunity to those who would want to participate in its development.
Romenergo S.A. President and CEO Alexandru Parvescu in turn said the Canadian participation in the sector was very much appreciated. ‘Most of us know how nuclear energy started and grew in this country - together with Canadian companies', he stressed. According to Parvescu, the Romanian industry has been through a period of transition and the project of units 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda nuclear power station brings an opportunity, as well as a challenge. ‘Participation is for the benefit of the entire community', he said. He further emphasized that contracts were needed for the equipment needed in connection with the two reactors and that the input of foreign partners would be very important. Since the Canadian partners are also bringing the know-how, co-operation could be a major step in developing the sector. Romatom Secretary General Gheorghe Lucaciu said the co-operation with the Canadian partners would also bring a guarantee of quality. ‘We want to work together in order to obtain a high quality of goods and equipment at a low cost', Lucaciu said.
Attending the meeting, HITACHI Canada Manager Christopher Deir said he was happy to see Romania being a part pf the ‘renaissance' of nuclear energy and noted that a number of contacts had already been established between Romanian and Canadian partners.
