BNR cuts settlement commission level by 5 percent
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 2 Aprilie 2009
Starting on April 1, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) cut by 5 percent the level of the commissions charged from credit institutions for large-value or urgent payments in the real time gross settlement system (ReGIS).
The nominal value of the commission will stand at 6.87 lei (some 1.62 euros) for such large-value or urgent payments charged from the credit institutions in Romania via the ReGIS system (as against 7.23 lei at present).
BNR expects cutting the commissions in the electronic payment system will bring modifications at the level of the commissioning policy established by the credit institutions for such payment services and settlements offered to their customers, cutting of the financial brokerage costs contributing to the development of non-cash payment activities in Romania too.
BNR is going thus to act further towards cutting commissions charged from the credit institutions participating in the ReGIS system, so that these commissions should gradually get closer to the level of such commissions charged by the central banks that are members of the European Central Banks System, reads a release of BNR sent to Agerpres on Wednesday.
The ReGIS system, with real time gross settlement, is the most important component of the electronic payment system in Romania, via this system being paid the settlements for large-value payments (exceeding 50,000 lei) and urgent payments of banking customers, as well as payment instructions initiated by all the other auxiliary systems (SENT - small-value payment system in Romania, SaFIR - depository and securities settlement system, RoCLEAR - the clearing and settlement system on the Stock Exchange, Mastercard, VISA).
Since the launch of the ReGIS system in 2005 up to now, BNR, in its capacity as administrator of the system, has proceeded to progressively cut settlements afferent to processing and settlements charged for large-value or urgent payments, their level being cut by approximately 70 percent (from 22.50 lei to 6.87 lei).
