As many as 500,000 employees have gross wages over 1,000 euros
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 23 Aprilie 2009
The number of employees with gross wages over 1,000 euros grew 12 times in four years and by 70 percent in 2008, due to the boom in foreign investments daily Ziarul Financiar reports.
Half a million people had in October last year gross average wages of over 1,000 euros, that its a 70-percent surge as against October 2007, according to figures carried by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
Therefore, over 10 percent of employees in economy have wages higher than 1,000 euros. At a gross wage worth some 1,000 euros the net wage is of some 700 euros (3,000 lei). The minimal wage in France is over 1,300 euros.
The number of employees with gross wages higher than 1,000 euros has increased significantly over the past years from 40,000 in 2004 to 500,000 last year.
'The period was of growth. Giving salaries worth 1,000 euros had become a practice and mirrored the fight for people, but also tensions on the labour market, in a solid context of growth. For a European country, the fact that only 10 percent of employees earn a gross wage worth 1,000 euros is scant,' said Florin Pogonaru, president of the Romanian Businessmen Association. (AOAR).
However, last year reported the biggest growth in the number of those with high salaries, 200,000 employees.
2008 was the year with the biggest rise in foreign direct investments, which outstripped 9 billion euros as against 7.2 billion euros in 2007 and almost double as against 2004, when they stood at 5 billion euros. The strengthening of investments inflows has intensified the struggle for labour force, triggering higher salaries.
The National Statistics Institute carries a statistical research each year regarding the distribution of employees on salary groups based on the figures of October of the previous year, allowing for 13 salary groups, from the minimal wage and below it, up to over 8,000 lei.Wages of over 8,000 lei (2,175 euros) had in October 44,300 employees, whereas the salary group ranged between 7,0001 and 8,0000 lei (1,900 - 2,175 euros) had some 22,000 employees. The bulk of employees in Romanian economy have gross average wages ranging between 651 and 1,000 lei (175-270 euros), namely 1.1 million people.
