Structure of remittances, a way to measure emigrant Romanian communities
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 28 Aprilie 2009
Agerpres correspondent Ruxandra Constantinescu reports: The number of Romanians who emigrated to various countries is proportional to remittances and this is the most reliable information based on which one can approximate the size of the Romanian community in Spain, believes Professor Dumitru Stan of the Bucharest Faculty of Sociology and Social Assistance who led the sociological research 'Romanian Communities in Spain' financed by the Soros Foundation.
Dumitru Stan says that this is the only reliable information for the approximation of the number of Romanians who left abroad, as 'their number is proportional with the structure of remittances'; interpretation of this data shows that 'about 40pc of the Romanians who left abroad are in Italy and about 30pc are in Spain, with an estimation error of 5pc,' said the Romanian Professor
According to Stan, 'of the total EUR 6.3 bln that officially entered Romania in 2008, 27pc came from Spain.'
For two years in a row, in 2007 and 2008, 'Romania was among the world's leading ten states in terms of remittances, that is money from migration; it's almost for sure that in 2009 the situation will be different,' said Professor Stan.
According to the conclusions of the study, 'setting a business afoot and acquiring a house are the two major elements driving emigrant Romanians homewards, but coming home plans are strongly integrated with those for goods acquisition, debt repaying, house building and starting a business.'
On the other hand, 'immigrants do not judge their situation of migrants only in terms of jobs, but by association, cumulatively: they would return home if they found relatively well paid jobs for both themselves and spouses,' concludes the study conducted under the guidance of Professor Stan.
The research 'Romanian Communities in Spain' was conducted over Sept. 3 - 25, 2008 on a sample of 832 Romanians living in Coslada, Arganda del Rey, Alcala de Henares and Torrejon de Ardoz (Madrid Community) that concentrate 40pc of the Romanians in the Community, except for Madrid.
