Romanian banking system reporting loss at end Q1
AGERPRES - Romanian News Agency - 4 Mai 2009
Overall, the Romanian banking system registered loss in January and February 2009, on the background of the 'booming' provisions for doubtful and delinquent credits, head of the National Bank's Surveillance Department Nicolae Cinteza told a symposium organized on Thursday at the central bank' seat.
In March, the banking system recovered the losses accumulated in the first two months but the balance at the end of Q1 was still running in the negative, said Cinteza.
He mentioned that in March 2008 the share of doubtful and delinquent credits was 2.17pc for loans disbursed to clients not hedged against currency risk, a figure below the total share per overall system or that for the loans raised by clients not exposed to the currency risk. On the other hand, in one year - specifically until March 2009 - the share of doubtful and delinquent credits to clients not hedged against the currency risk increased threefold to 6.03pc.
'Personally, I am concerned with the frequency whereby the trading companies declare themselves insolvent. This will cause the banks serious problems in the coming period, just like unemployment,' said Cinteza.
The BNR official added that the central bank is conducting a check on commercial banks over suspicions that 2008 provisions are transferred in 2009 in order to help the institutions report positive results for the year before.
