Car battery maker Rombat weathers crisis without layoffs, sees profit up 48% y/y in Q1

Romania's biggest car battery producer Rombat Bistrita did not lay off or send any of its employees into technical unemployment and is not considering such action in the future, despited the current harsh economic conditions, declared for NewsIn the company's marketing director Elena Sava.
Sava added that if sales inside the country were to continue on a downward slope, the company will reorient itself to exports, where it has so far turned down some orders.
Rombat Bistrita reported a 2 million euros profit corresponding to the first quarter of 2009, making for a 48 percent year-on-year increase due to exports.
Sales of the first three months boosted 33 percent on the similar period of last year.
Sales for export had an important contribution to the profit hike, as around 60 percent of the output went to partners outside the borders.
Rombat is currently exporting batteries to France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and the Republic of Moldova and is accredited as a regional supplier in the Renault group for the plants in Romania, Russia and Iran and in the PSA Peugeot group for the Slovenia factory.
The company owns 45-50 percent of the internal spare parts market,which is estimated at 1 million batteries. Rombat produces some two million batteries each year and specializes in ten such types. It employs more than 600 people.
