Tuborg brewer enters mineral water market

United Breweries Bereprod (URBB) making the Tuborg and Skol beer brands will launch Bilbor mineral water soon, entering thus the third market segment, after that of the beer and the fruit juices, the Ziarul financiar writes on Tuesday.

The Company is most likely to finalize an investment worth 5-5 million euros in building a mineral water bottling line in Bilbor commune, Harghita County (central Romania) in June, mineral water market sources say. This is the single greenfield project in the mineral water industry announced to be finished in 2009.

Thus URBB attacks a market of round 300 million euros dominated by the Romanian bottling companies, the biggest of them Romaqua (Borsec) and European Drinks (Izvorul Minunilor). These two local companies also developed the strategy of diversifying their drinks portfolio, but to the opposite direction namely on the mineral waters market, first and expanded to the juice market, afterwards, and started making beer, later.

URBB is one of the most expansive drinks makers on the market, with Israeli shareholder that have brewed Tuborg beer since 1996, under license, and entered the fruit juice segment in 2005-2006 through launching brands from the portfolio of the German Eckes Granini, Orangina and Granini company.
