ARIS: Foreign investment projects of over 930 million euros
ACT Media – news agency - 4 Iunie 2009
The Romanian Agency for Foreign Investments (ARIS) has this year received 17 projects intentions from investors, worth over 930 million euros, which will create nearly 4,000 jobs, the biggest project, of 150 million euros, being related to the iron and steel industry.
'Under these circumstances, ARIS monitors 77 investment projects, under various stages, from intent to implementation, worth 7 billion euros,' daily Ziarul Financiar quoted ARIS vice president, Claudiu Preoteasa as saying.
He mentioned that the largest investment this year might be conducted in southern Romania and involves the construction of a factory in the iron and steel sector. The investors' intentions are especially aimed at the areas of renewable energy, machinery construction for industry, automotive components and wood processing sector, the source says.
ARIS expects foreign investment of 4.5-5 billion euro in Romania this year, in spite of the crisis.Romania continues to be one of the most attractive markets in the region for investment projects, given that the effects of the economic crisis are less felt in this country than in other more developed states, said ARIS president Sorin Mihai Vasilescu.
Talking about Romania's advantages, Vasilescu mentioned 'the access to the European single market with 500 million consumers, being at the same time one of the largest markets in Central and Eastern Europe, with over 21 million consumers, its strategic position, at the crossroads of three European transport routes, that is corridors 4, 7 and 9, which provide easy access to countries in the former USSR, the Balkans, the Middle East and North Africa. Romania also holds 1/3 of the Danube, will have access to European funding worth 33 billion euros and has the biggest tourist potential. The still cheap labor force against a raising unemployment is a plus, the downside being the poor infrastructure.
