Bucharest ranks 70th in top of most expensive European cities

Bucharest went down one position in 2009 in the top of the most expensive European cities from 71 to 70, while at world level it ranks 187th, 55 positions lower than in 2008, according to the British firm ECA International.ECA International compared the level of the living standard in the largest 370 cities of 184 countries based on an average basket made of 128 basic goods, food and general, among which dairy products, meat and fish, fruit, vegetables, beverages, tobacco, clothes, household appliances and leisure activities.In the classification for Europe there were 73 cities of 37 states.

According to the study presented in June 2008 by ECA International, Bucharest ranked 71st in the classification of the most expensive European cities and 132nd at international level for employees of foreign firms in Bucharest.Romania is considered a cheaper city by foreigners compared to Budapest (69), Chisinau (68), Prague (61), Sofia (48), Bratislava (43) Istanbul (38), Madrid (30), Milan (21) or Rome (18). "At European level, Copenhagen is the most expensive city for foreigners and surpassed Oslo which ranked first in 2008. That change is explained by the depreciation of the Norwegian currency caused by the drop of oil prices in the present economic context," the ECA study shows.

The first ten most expensive European cities include Oslo, Geneva, Zurich, Bale, Bern, Stavanger, Helsinki, Paris and Berlin. The first five European cities rank 6th to 10th in the world. Luanda is considered the most expensive place in the world followed by Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokohama and Kobe.

Multinational companies use the result of the classification to give compensations to employees detached outside the country of origin.ECA International is an organization with 4,000 members of 35 states specialized in the administration of international labour force mobility.
