NewsIn - 24 Iunie 2009
New car sales decreased by 49.2 percent from January to May year-on-year to 57,894 units from 114,020 units in 2008, informed the car producers' and importers' association APIA.
Sales amounted in May to 13,338 units, 43.15 percent down from 23,464 units in May 2008, while sales of new cars made in Romania stood in the fifth month at 4,361 units, 38.3 percent down versus 2008. All through January to May dealers sold some 16,726 new cars produced locally, 52.5 percent fewer than last year.
The total Romanian car market, including cars, commercial vehicles and buses stood in the first five months at 15,123 units, 48.1 percent below the similar period last year.
Dacia chews on the largest share of the market, of 32.7 percent, with 4,636 cars sold. Hyundai holds 7.8 percent and Renault controls 7.6 percent. As to the five-month classification, Dacia also came first with 36,342 units sold, followed by Skoda with 10,392 units and Renault with 9,694 units.
The best sold model during the first five months of the year was Kia ceed, with 724 units sold, followed by Renault Clio with 640 units, Opel Astra Classic with 514 units and Hyundai i30 with 435 units.
The auto market rose by 3.6 percent to 140,009 units versus 134,270 during the similar period last year. APIA informs that the growth was generated by an increase in sales of commercial vehicles.
The auto market was brutally affected by the economic crisis which plagued sales and curbed demand. Dacia had to close gates for a while in December last year and January this year and let go of part of the employees.
