Milk producers and processors reach agreement
Agerpres - Agentia Nationala de Presa - 3 Iulie 2009
Milk producers and milk processors reached an agreement on milk acquisition and collecting, Agriculture Minister Ilie Sarbu said on Thursday, after a meeting with the two parties.
'We are on the right course, we've found the midway. The milk producers and the milk processors agreed on the verification of the milk coming to Romania from abroad, so that it should be at least of the quality of the milk made in Romania. The Agriculture Ministry is only a mediator, but it has been a beneficial discussion, because the two parties have already set a couple of common points,' Minister Sarbu said.
According to the talks between the representatives of the cattle breeders and those of the Romanian Milk Industry Employers Association, it has been accredited the idea that Romania cannot stay only at the level of a milk consumer. The talks held on Thursday at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development (MAPDR) are aimed at concluding an agreement with the milk processors so that most milk should be bought from Romania.
The milk processors cannot accept a lower milk quality. Sixty one percent of the milk made in Romania meets the EU norms, so that we may think the companies are to buy more milk from the Romanian market, Minister Sarbu stressed.
At present, Romania has a balanced milk consumption after it had dropped by round 30 percent, some time ago, the MAPDR official pointed out. One of the issues Minister Sarbu has in view is the milk's price on the shelf. There is an extra milk production, but despite this the milk's price in the store grows, fact that the MAPDR officials can investigate.
