World Bank to help liberalization of Romanian energy market
Agerpres - Romanian News Agency - 21 Iulie 2009
World Bank (WB) is to help Romania to liberalize the energy market and to attain the European strategy objectives, of enhancing the renewable energy weight in the national energy consumption, the so-called 20-20-20 strategy, reveals the Romania Country Partnership Strategy, worked out and released by WB. As well, the bank is to aid Romania to apply the European Union Directives on Water Quality and Nitrates, to reduce its environment, social and economic vulnerability, when faced with natural and technological disasters.
IFC (the investment company of the World Bank Group) is to give loans aimed to cover the development of energy efficiency and is to invest in renewable energy projects (wind turbines and/or biomass).
Although WB's involvement in this field was reduced and currently it is mainly focusing on the rehabilitation of a hydro power station, the closing down of mines in compliance with the environment requirements and bolstering economic activities in the mining zones, WB could also consider sustaining the privatization process for the remainder of energy and mining companies, in case the state decides to privatize them.
WB recently took the decision to aid the Romanian companies in need of assistance (GEF grant) for the introduction of energy efficient technologies.
To hit this target, Romania's Government considers the adequate solutions for adapting the remaining mining sector's dimension to the energy sector development requirements, said WB in its Romania Country Partnership Strategy.
