Robin Barnett: Ford attracts investors at Craiova

The economic crisis does not scare off the investors interested in the region of Oltenia. Thus, the Ambassador of Great Britain to Bucharest, Robin Barnett, who is on a visit to Craiova, explained that the activity of the American car maker Ford will contribute, in spite of the economic crisis, to the "attractiveness of the city" for the British investors, Mediafax shows.

I had a discussion with the mayor of Craiova, Antonie Solomon, about the next steps and the positive effects of the partnership signed with Wakefield. I refer especially to economic benefits. In spite of the financial crisis, Craiova remains attractive for the British investors," Barnett declared at a press conference given on the occasion of a twinning protocol between Craiova and Wakefield. In the next period, until the end of this year, a delegation of the city hall and of Craiova Chamber of Trade will go to Wakefield.

"We encourage the collaboration between the two Chambers of Trade establishing a bilateral agreement. We back the exchange of experience between the two local authorities, for the improvement of the services offered to the public and, not least, the identification of the economic sectors of bilateral interest," the Ambassador of Great Britain to Bucharest added. Robin Barnett said that Ford investment from Craiova will contribute to the economic development of the city, attracting investors.

Further to the meeting, the mayor of Craiova, Antonie Solomon, promised the British officials support for the opening of an office of Provident Financial, "a successful British affair in Romania."

Ford posted net profit of over USD 2 bln

Ford Motor Company, the only big American can maker who did not ask to go under the protection of the bankruptcy law, announced a net profit of USD 2.26 bln in the second quarter 2009, after it benefited from the restructuring of a debt of USD 3.4 bln. The sales at world level were USD 11 bln smaller, the international press agencies write, HotNews quotes. Ford situation has much improved, the producer managing to obtain a net profit of USD 2.26 bln, after it had posted losses of USD 8.7 bln a year ago. The profit is due to the benefits of USD 3.4 bln further to the reduction of some debts, after the company had sold and purchased shares in March in order to reduce its debts by USD 7.7 bln.
