ARACO proposes motorway construction programme updating
Agerpres - 3 August 2009
The Government's long-term strategy for motorway construction, throughout 2035, is not applicable given that there are no investment funds available, say representatives of the Romanian Association of Construction Entrepreneurs (ARACO), which represents the interests of 1,300 construction companies, with business in excess of 1.5 billion euros, according to a Ziarul financiar daily report.
'If there are no money for motorway construction, the Government should reach our conclusion, namely to implement cheaper and faster projects. The megalomaniac proposals referring to motorway construction cannot be fulfilled under the current economic conditions', said Alexandru Dobre, ARACO expert on infrastructure.
The constructors, quoted by the newspaper, say that the motorway programme of 3,144 km., at a cost of some 31.44 billion euros in 25 years, is not updated to to the current economic conditions. They say that one lane motorway construction is feasible - without the dividing segment between both ways and without an emergency lane - and express ways, where the traffic is not very intense. For a one lane motorway the investment is up to 6 million euros/km., and for a three lane express way, with a dividing rail, the construction would involve 2 million euros/km., according to the Swedish model, the constructors also say.
ARACO experts think that the investment into a complete profile motorway (two lanes each way, plus an emergency one) is too expensive for the zones where the traffic is low and one-lane motorway should be built instead, the quoted newspaper also said.
