NewsIn - 11 August 2009
The annual rate of inflation lowered to 5.06 percent in July, and consumer prices slipped 0.07 percent over June, as foodstuff became cheaper and prices for non foodstuff and services idled, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS).
The inflation last reached such a steep level in August 2007, when the annual index of consumer prices stood at 4.96 percent. Analysts polled by NewsIn expected the decline of foodstuff prices to temper the annual rate of inflation in July at 4.8 - 5.2 percent, but also the stable exchange rate. Moreover, they anticipate the inflation will push the brake pedal even more in the following months. In June, the annual rate of inflation stood at 5.86 percent.
Romania's Central Bank (BNR) targets a 3.5 percent inflation this year, plus or minus 1 percentage point, and the last prognosis indicate the level of inflation at 4.3 percent at year-end, slightly downwards from the previous estimates. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also deems Romania's inflation will stand at 4.3 percent at the end of 2009. BNR also revised downwards inflation prognosis for the end of 2010, from 2.8 percent to 2.6 percent, as the inflation target was settled at 3.5 percent as well, take or leave 1 percentage point.
