NewsIn - 12 August 2009
Romania recorded at the end of June a total external debt of 75.476 billion euros, a 2.8 percent increase from the end of last year, as the medium and long-term debt kept growing, unlike the short-termed one which headed down, according to data provided by the central bank (BNR).
The medium and long-term debt answered for 75.8 percent of the whole debt, up 11.7 percent versus the end of 2008, while the short-termed debt reduced weight by 17.8 percent from December 31 last year.
The central bank, which until recently published only the long and medium-term figures, began to add data on the short-term debt starting February as many foreign analysts warned in the past months over a certain danger posed by the short-term debt on Romania this year, considering the restraining of the available financing.
In the mean time, Romania inked an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Commission (EC), the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for an external loan of 20 billion euros for two years, of which 11.8 billion euros should be available this year.
At the end of June, Romania's short-term debt amounted to 18.239 billion euros, an 17.8 percent decrease compared to the end of last year, when it stood at 22.2 billion euros.
The medium and long-term debt reached 57.237 billion euros, up 11.7 percent over the 51.221 billion euros recorded at the end of 2008, as the first installment of the IMF loan worth 5 billion euros entered the country.
The public non-guaranteed external debt amounted to 36.16 billion euros at the end of June, up 3.3 percent versus the end of 2008.
The public and publicly guaranteed external debt was of 10.368 billion euros on June 30, down 3.4 percent over the end of December 2008, and its weight within the total debt lowered from 14.62 to 13.74 percent.
At the same time, the direct public debt slipped slightly in June, from 9.012 billion euros at the end of 2008 to 8.754 billion euros, BNR also showed.
