Bank deposits in Romania grow in August for the fifth month in a row, to lei 161.4bn

People and companies' deposits in lei and foreign currency kept advancing in August and inched 1.7 percent over July, to 161.39 billion lei, on more foreign currency savings and companies' higher lei deposits, the central lender BNR announced.
In July, deposits had increased by 0.4 percent over June, to 158.634 billion lei. The annual growth rate of deposits advanced to 14.2 percent in July, from 13 percent in the previous month.
Lei deposits rose 1.4 percent in the eighth month of the year versus the end of July, to 102.85 billion lei and hiked 10 percent year-on-year, BNR also shows.
Population's savings in lei reached 59.76 billion lei, having slipped by 0.6 percent month-on-month, but advanced 19.8 percent year-on-year. Companies' deposits increased 4.2 percent month-on-month to 43.09 billion lei, and dipped 1.2 percent from August 2008.
Foreign currency deposits expressed in lei grew by 2.4 percent in August month-on-month to 58.54 billion lei. Expressed in euros, they added 2.1 percent to 13.86 billion euros.
People's savings in foreign currency won 2.4 percent versus July to 34.6 billion lei, similar to companies' deposits, which reached 23.94 billion lei.
Expressed in euros, people's foreign currency deposits went down 0.6 percent in August year-on-year, while companies' savings climbed 7.2 percent.
