Hungary opens 3rd consulate in Romania, in western city of Timisoara

Hungary officially opened the 3rd consulate in Romania, in the western city of Timisoara, with the Hungarian Ambassador to Bucharest Oszkar Fuzes attending the ceremony.

Dr. Zoltan Panczel, who is also the Chairman of the Fornetti Romania Board of Directors, will head the new diplomatic mission in Timisoara.Timisoara City Mayor Gheorghe Ciuhandu at the opening ceremony said that 'it was necessary setting up this consulate in Timisoara for, besides such economic reasons and the important Hungarian community in Timisoara, there also existed a long common history between the city and Hungary'. Nemeth Zsolt, the head of the Committee on Foreign Affairs with the Hungarian Parliament, also wanted to specify that 'Zoltan Panczel was the best suited for the position in Timisoara, which is a multicultural city.'

The honorific consulate of Hungary in Timisoara will open doors de facto in July this year, following to have the same attributions, rights and obligations as the general consulate.Zoltan Panczel last year became the Chairman of the Hungarian Business Association in Romania.The new diplomatic mission in Timisoara will join the other similar missions opened after 1990 in Romania, of Austria, France, the Netherlands, India, Germany and Italy.

In 1922, there were opened in Timisoara a consulate of Italy and one of France, the Vice-Consulate of Great Britain, and also consulates of Austria and Germany. Three years later, there appeared a consular agent of the Czech Republic in Timisoara, and there were also opened consulates of Belgium and Guatemala. In 1924, there opened a consulate of Sweden and in 1941 one of the Netherlands and Paraguay.

The World War II suddenly put an end to this process. Today, there are only functioning in Timisoara the general consulates of Italy, of the Federal Republic of Germany and of Serbia, together with 4 honorific consulates, belonging to Austria, the first opened in Romania after the World War I, Sweden, the Netherlands and Tunisia, all of them opened after 1999.
