Poland's President Kaczynski strats his official visit to Romania

Poland's Presdient Lech Kaczynski is paying an official visit to Romania, October 6-7, at the invitation of his Romanian counterpart Traian Basescu, the Romania President's Press Office reports in a press release.

Kaczynski and his wife Maria will be welcomed on Wednesday at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace by President Basescu and his wife Maria. After one-to-one official talks, the two heads of state will make a joint press statement.

The conversation between the two heads of state is expected focus on the development of the bilateral relationship between Romania and Poland in the context of direct relations as well as within the European Union and NATO.

During the visit, a strategic partnership will be signed between Romania and Poland designed to lay the foundations for joint projects in the areas of domestic affairs and public administration, defence, culture and education, industry and energy, transport, commerce, environment and regional cooperation.

Kaczynski's visit was announced this May at a symposium celebrating the 90th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Romania and Poland, Agerpres reports.

'The relationship between Romania and Poland is marked this year at the highest level: a March visit to Poland of President Basescu and a visit to Romania by Polish President Kaczynski in October,' Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu announced back then.

President Basescu paid a one-day official visit to Poland this March at the invitation of Kaczynski.

Romania and Poland established diplomatic ties on February 22, 1919 at the level of provisional representation. On May 31, 1919, the relations were promoted to legation. On November 11, 1945 they were promoted to embassy.

High-level visits and periodic consultations on European and world affairs are said to have strengthened and further consolidated relations between the two countries.

Romania is currently ranked 21st among Poland's foreign trade partners and 15th among Poland's EU trade partners, while Poland is ranked 12th among Romania's foreign trade partner in terms of exports and 11th in terms of imports.
