Leu, highest depreciation over past nine months

Leu, the national currency, has depreciated on Thursday as against the euro, hitting a record high for the second time this year 4.3079 lei for one euro, up by 0.84 lei (0.20 percent) over the exchange rate announced on Wednesday by the National bank of Romania (BNR) and established at 4.2995 lei.
This is the highest depreciation of the national currency as against the euro over the past nine months and a half.
According to the statistics posted on BNR's web site, a higher benchmark exchange rate was reported in the meeting of January 22, 2009, when one euro stood at 4.3127 lei.
Also on Thursday, the American dollar gained ground over the leu currency, with the central bank setting an exchange rate of 2.9197 lei, up by 1.23 lei (0.42 percent, compared to the value of 2.9074 lei, reported in the previous meeting.
One gram of gold was established on Thursday at 97.0792 lei,up by 0.34 lei (0.35 percent), compared to 96.7418 lei, the value established in the meeting of Wednesday.
