Average revenue for individual medical practice, EUR 165,000 in 2008
Agerpres - 5 Noiembrie 2009
A private medical practice in Bucharest posted the highest net revenue in the industry last year, specifically 165,000 euros, which stands for a monthly income of over 13,000 euros.
In Bucharest alone, individual medical practices - dental offices excluded - generated the year before 31 million euros in net incomes.
According to statistical data of the Bucharest Public Finance Directorate General, the practice placed second in the ranking collected 151,000 euros in net revenues.
'Incomes are higher for particular specialist practices, such as obstetrics & gynecology offices, especially if they also perform in vitro fertilization. As substantial as these revenues may seem, they are well below the European yearly average, which stands between 250,000 and 300,000 euro for a specialist physician,' Vasile Astarastoae, president of the Romanian Doctors College, told Business Standard daily.
Most individual offices are owned by family doctors, who, according to Astarastoae, collected last year an average monthly income of 1,800 lei (1 euro trades for 4.2 lei).
Niche specialization medical practices, such as those for cosmetic surgery, are among the most profitable. One practice can bring as much as 10,000 euros a month, and this not only in Bucharest. Even in small cities, a gynecology office can make as much as 10,000 euros a month, especially in the towns with a small number of options.
'Plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and even dermatology can yield similar incomes. Gynecology is not really that profitable, because the bulk of the revenues in this specialization comes from birth assistance, not consultations,' says Robert Serban, Gral Medical Gral general manager.
Romania is affected by a higher than 20 pct shortage of specialist doctors (or 2,117 medics). The nationwide number of specialist doctors nears 10,200. The public healthcare system is deeply under-financed, with just 3 pct of the GDP earmarked for this sector, whereas in the EU the average is 8 pct of GDP. Romania has 192.6 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants, while the average across the EU is 322.38; for medical specialists the figures are 46.90 in Romania as to 106.28 in the EU; for surgeons - 19.08 versus 39.32; for gynecologists - 9.31 as to 13.53 in the EU; Romania has 10.4 pediatricians per 100,000 inhabitants, whereas the figure across the EU is 14.15 per 100,000 inhabitants. The number of family physicians is 68.73 per 100,000 inhabitants, while the figure in the EU is 96.71. More than 6,300 doctors have left Romania in the last three years.
