Bank deposits advance 15 pct in a year
Agerpres - 4 Ianuarie 2010
Corporate and population's bank deposits climbed to 163.7 billion lei (some 38.07 billion euros) in Nov. 2009, showing a rise of 15.2 percent compared to the similar period in 2008 and a slight advance from the previous month, Ziarul financiar daily reports following the data released by Romania's National Bank (BNR).
According to the quoted source, the companies further prefer foreign currency deposits, whereas the population keeps the largest part of savings in lei (national currency). As such, population's lei deposits advanced by almost 17 percent in the past year, whereas corporate savings in lei were 1.7 percent lower.
The rise of amounts placed into deposits was steepest in the last part of 2008 and in the first months of 2009 under conditions in which the banks aggressively increased the passives interest rates in order to compensate the lack of liquidity on the market. Also savings advanced on the background of the population and companies' uncertainty about the economic evolution.
