Banks borrowed 5.68 billion euro from central bank in December

Commercial banks used the facility offered by the National Bank of Romania and borrowed 24 billion lei (5.68 billion euro) in December, on the rise by 175% compared to November, when credit institutions borrowed only 8.73 billion lei (2.03 billion euro).
The interest rate paid by the banks for these loans was 12%.BNR increased bank crediting with the Lombard credit facility at the end of 2009.
At the same time deposits made by commercial banks with BNR dropped in December 5 times compared to November, going down to 990 million lei, from 5.39 billion lei.In December, the central bank slightly increased the volume of cash injected in the market by means of REPO type operations, the average daily value being 450 million lei on the rise against November when it was 180 million lei.At the level of the whole year 2009 the credit facility was intensely used by the banking system compared to the previous year, the total amount being 154.24 billion lei, while in 2008 the banks used the BNR facility for 88.99 billion lei.
