Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, told a press conference held in Bucharest on Monday, together with President Traian Basescu, that in the future European Council's informal meeting the modalities for overcoming the difficulties generated by the economic and financial crisis will be tackled, saying that the objective should be to ensure an EU average economic growth of at least 2 percent.
'Our objective must be to return to a sustainable economic growth with an average of at least 2 percent, in order to preserve the European social model and to keep up with the world's major economies,' said Herman van Rompuy.
Also, the President of the European Council detailed the topic related to the informal meeting's agenda on February 11, emphasizing the sustainable economic recovery.
'During the informal meeting between the Heads of State and Government summoned on February 11, we will discuss how we can ensure this economic recovery, will examine the way in which we will be able to quickly overcome the short-term challenges, difficulties related to this crisis and how we can implement the structural changes necessary to support a sustainable economic growth,' he said.
Herman van Rompuy also underlined that this was his first visit in Romania as President of the European Council and it has two main purposes. The first one relates to knowing the country, as well as the political decision-makers, better.
'I will need good, trusting relationships, with the EU member states' political leaders. These relationships will be crucial for the good performance of my mandate and for the member states' cooperation at the highest level. The second purpose of this visit is to make the first specific efforts related to challenges and priorities we are confronted with,' he said.
The President of the European Council also said that he was happy to be present in Bucharest, the capital of a country rich in history and culture, a country with an important share in the European cultural heritage. Also, Rompuy congratulated Traian Basescu for his being re-elected as Head of State and wished the new Government in Bucharest good luck.
