The US Embassy and the Romanian Council for Green Buildings on Thursday organized an interactive event 'Green Cafe: New Headquarters of US Embassy in Bucharest,' devoted to the representatives of the business environment in Romania that are interested in green buildings, informs the US diplomatic mission.
During the meeting they presented the project of the new headquarters of the Embassy, which will include technologies and solutions aimed at reaching a high level of energy efficiency and reducing the impact of the building on the environment, says the US Embassy in Bucharest.
The event was opened by Jeri Guthrie-Corn, assistant to the head of the US diplomatic mission, who said that the new headquarters must reflect the American respect for the culture and patrimony of the host country.
Although to many people it can be a mere building, to us it is much more than that. It is an illustration of our long-term pledge to the powerful US-Romania partnership. Both for me and for the US Government what matters is the new headquarters reflecting our respect for the culture and patrimony of the host country. The new headquarters demonstrates the US pledge to protect the environment, said Jeri Guthrie-Corn.
Steven Borncamp, chairman of the Romanian Council for Green Buildings, thinks that the project demonstrates the fact that it is possible to build green, energy efficient buildings and thus make a good investment.
The new headquarters of the US Embassy will cover a 40,000 square metre area in an area that includes both residential space and shopping centres, in the northern part of Bucharest, near the Tunari woods. More than 300 employees work on this building, most of them being Romanians. According to estimates, the investment will contribute 60-80 million dollars to Romanian economy. Some of the subcontractors are Bog'Art, Sommering-Mech, LaFarge, Titan Mar, Agerpres reports.
The US State Department is leader in designing and making energy efficient buildings and the project of the new headquarters of the US Embassy in Bucharest will be certified as a green building. In keeping with the policy adopted by the US, all new public buildings must observe the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standard, which is drawn up and promoted by the US Green Building Council.
