Romanians' back payments to credits triple y/y in 2009, to almost lei 8bn, the central bank says

People and companies' arrears to credits tripled last year to 7.84 billion lei, the increase being faster on the foreign currency side, according to data from the central lender BNR.

At the end of 2008, the volume of arrears was of 2.8 billion lei.

On the foreign currency segment, Romanians' back payments stood at 3.5 billion lei at the end of December last year, down 7.65 percent over the previous month.

Lei arrears inched 3.3 percent month-on-month in December 2009, to 4.34 billion lei.

The total volume of credits granted to people and companies amounted 201.2 billion lei at the end of last year, slightly down from the end of November 2009.

At the end of last year, 79.8 billion lei from the loans' volume were lei credits, while the foreign currency ones represented 121.4 billion lei.
