EnergoNuclear, AECL strike partnership for Cernavoda power plant Units 3 and 4
Agerpres - 9 Februarie 2010
Companies EnergoNuclear and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) signed a contract for the carrying out of the investment project for Units 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda power plant (south-eastern Romania) which is currently in the pre-project stage, EnergoNuclear informs.
The scope of the contract is the provision of consultancy services for nuclear security and the engineering required for the final definition of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant Project - Units 3 and 4, and covers, inter alia, activities in areas such as design, authorization, assessment of the condition of the infrastructure and safety requirements.
Romania and Canada have a long tradition in nuclear energy cooperation, with Cernavoda Units 1 and 2 operating according to the CANDU 600 project.
'This contract marks a significant step forward, ahead of the completion of Units 3 and 4. Units 1 and 2, which have been operating since 1996 and 2007 respectively, already provide 20 percent of Romania's electricity production and generate important economic benefits, highly-skilled jobs, as well as business opportunities. Once completed, the two new units will significantly boost our nuclear energy potential and will ensure new economic and workforce employment opportunities in the region,' said EnergoNuclear general manager Dan Ionescu.
CANDU 6 is the best performing reactor in the world, having a 90 pct capacity factor over its useful life. We believe Units 3 and 4 will perform equally well, said AECL president Hugh MacDiarmid.
