Bank deposits in Romania drop 2% in January to lei 164.3bn,after nine consecutive months of increase

People and companies' deposits in lei and foreign currency reported a 2 percent monthly decline in January after nine consecutive months of increase, to 164.3 billion lei, especially on companies' lower lei savings, data of the central lender BNR show.
In December last year, bank deposits soared 2.6 percent over November, to 167.7 billion lei. The annual growing rate of deposits tempered to 6.6 percent in January, from 10.8 percent in December.
Lei deposits slipped 2.1 percent in January on the last month of 2009, to 100.54 billion lei, but added 4 percent versus the same month last year, according to BNR.
Population's lei savings inched 1.2 percent last month versus December 2009, to 59.9 billion lei, while companies' deposits reduced 6.6 percent to 40.6 billion lei. Compared to January last year, people's lei deposits hiked 9.9 percent, while those of companies diminished 1.5 percent.
Foreign currency deposits expressed in lei eased 1.9 percent in January month-on-month, to 63.8 billion lei. Expressed in euros, they added 0.6 percent to 15.48 billion euros.
People's savings in foreign currency lost 1.5 percent versus December to 37.55 billion lei, while companies' deposits slipped 2.6 percent to 26.25 billion lei.
Expressed in euros, people's foreign currency deposits went up 17 percent in January year-on-year, while companies' savings rose 8.6 percent.
